Ciner Soda Ash Business Bounces Back in Q2

Ciner Resources LP of Atlanta, GA has reported second quarter net income of US$6.8 million on net sales of US$120.7 million compared with a net loss of US$5.4 million on net sales of US$76.2 million. Domestic soda ash sales rose 60%, to US$70.5 million, and international sales were up 57% at US$32.0 million.

Soda ash volume produced increased 45% from the prior year second quarter to 656,600 tons, and soda ash volume sold increased 52.5% to 650,200 tons. During the second quarter of 2020, the partnership experienced a significant decline in production volumes and demand in response to COVID-19. During the second quarter of 2021, the partnership saw continuing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in more soda ash production.

Ciner’s average sales price in the second quarter increased 3.9% to US$185.64/ton, reflecting a 5.5% decrease in its domestic market, to US$213.96/ton, and a 13.1% increase in the international market to US$156.53/ton.

Ciner is continuing to develop plans and execute the early phases for a potential new Green River expansion project that it says will increase production levels up to 3.5 million tons/year. The company has conducted the initial basic design and is currently evaluating and pursuing the related permits and detailed cost and market analysis pursuant to the basic design.

Solvay SA of Belgium has reported second quarter sales for its Chemicals segment of €820 million (US$963 million), a 24.5% increase from the second quarter of 2020. Soda ash sales were up 8% thanks to the continued recovery in flat glass, while the container glass market remained soft. The company noted record sales of sodium bicarbonate in June due to strong SOLVAir business used in flue gas treatment and strong U.S. power demand.
